Grades 4-5 went on a walking trip to the Buetler Farm across the way from Kula School. It's a working farm with produce, animals, and christmas trees. They have a beautifully organized farm with many fruit trees, monterey pine trees, persimmon trees, coffee trees, chickens and geese. We got to see, touch and taste different fruits and nuts. We were served banana bread and freshly made juice. They use their fruits and nuts to make many kinds of jams, and other products. During christmas they sell their trees to all the locals. It's amazing what's right in our back yard!
Several of our STRETCH students have been involved in Math Team this school year. We went to the Seabury Math competition in the winter and just today competed in the Math Matters competition at Maui Waena Middle School. What a great experience for our students. They did awesome; bringing home 3rd place in the team competition. It was a "girl power" team as the announcer described them including; 5th graders Lilah Li, Kathryn O'Neill, 4th grader Zariah Birrer, and 3rd grader Jaelia Olaitman. Lilah Li was the top individual scorer with a 34/35 on the individual challenge. Other team members included; James McCall, Grace Wright, Emma Fusato and Lance Morikawa. Thank you to Mrs. Jos Akoi (a fourth grade teacher at kula) and Mrs. Kara Fusato (an awesome volunteer parent) for helping our Kula students be successful. So exciting! Thanks to our MEDB Ke Alahele Grant we were able to get each child a candy Lei and the entire Math Team including those who were unable to attend the competition will enjoy a pizza party to celebrate a successful year of math growth. We continued our studies of forces and motion by creating pasta bridges. This year Kula had a science fair including all 4th grade students as well as all STRETCH students grades 2-5. It was a huge success with over 80 participants and over 100 people who attended the event. The students blew us away with their interesting projects. Congratulations to the first place winners who were rewarded with a kitchen science project kit provided by our MEDB Ke Alahele Grant. The grant not only funds our curriculum and materials but also some wonderful prizes for our students involved in math and science events in our community. |
