Ask: How can we create a bird feeder that is accessible to Maui species of birds using 7 of the following materials; paper plates, spoons, string, bottles, boxes, skewers, chopsticks, craft sticks?
- Birds are able to get to the feeder easily
- Birds are able to get to the food easily
- Feeder keeps the food safe from animals other than birds
- Made of materials that are safe for all animals
- Exactly 7 items from the materials list must be used
- Must complete each stage in the time allotted
Imagine: Students discussed the different adaptations of various birds. Watch here. We also read the article "Cracked" to learn about bird adaptations.
Plan: We explored different DIY bird feeders to help us plan our drafts.
We asked ourselves a series of questions including; Which foods on our list would be easiest for local birds to eat?, What can you use to hold the food where birds can reach it?, Do all bird feeders need to be in containers, or can food be stuck to something?, What other animals might take the food?, Can you design a bird feeder that lets birds get the food but keeps it safe from other kinds of animals? Here are some of our plans.
Create: We took time to create our bird feeders out of our 7 materials. We all worked well together- taking turns and all helping in the design process.
Test: We set up our bird-feeders and we've been checking them daily.
Improve: Some of us needed to make our bird-feeder lighter so it would hang in a tree. Also some of us needed to have a larger whole for birds to get tot he food.
